EdUHK champions National Security Education across Hong Kong

EdUHK actively promoted national security education this April by organising a diverse range of initiatives across the city. Collaborating with four key districts – Yau Tsim Mong, Eastern, Tai Po, and Wan Chai – the University aligned its efforts with the principles of National Security Education Day (NSED) to foster civic responsibility and national security awareness among students, educators, and the wider public.

Flag-raising ceremony: a unified commitment

On 15 April, EdUHK hosted a solemn flag-raising ceremony at its Tai Po campus to observe NSED under the theme: ‘Proactively Align with the 15th Five-Year Plan Follow a Holistic Approach to Development and Security’. The ceremony was attended by EdUHK Council Deputy Chairman Professor Terence Chan Ho-wah, Treasurer Ms Imma Ling Kit-sum, President Professor John Lee Chi-Kin, and various government and community representatives.

District partnerships in action

EdUHK extended its educational reach deep into local communities through tailor-made district-level collaborations:

Yau Tsim Mong District: On 11 April, the University co-hosted a National Security Education Seminar and Recognition Ceremony at the Tsim Sha Tsui Community Hall. Attracting over 300 participants, the event featured prominent speakers, including Legislative Council President Dr the Hon Starry Lee Wai-king and Commissioner of Police Mr Chow Yat-ming. It also honoured local students and teachers who used photography and short speeches to explore national security.

Eastern District: Partnering with the Eastern District Office on 13 April, EdUHK held a promotional event at North Point Community Hall. The event recognised outstanding entries in parent-child colouring contests and teacher-led short films focusing on cultural preservation and cybersecurity.

Tai Po District: On 14 April, EdUHK hosted a Recognition Ceremony for the Creativity Competition at the Tai Po campus. The Competition was themed around national security in relation to culture, ecology and AI. The event also featured talks on the award-winning ‘EmoCare’ emotional health application, innovation exhibitions, and students’ speech performances.

Wan Chai District: A joint event on 15 April blended martial arts performances and orchestral displays with educational contests. Former Secretary for Justice Dr Elsie Leung Oi-sie commended the diverse approach, noting that national security is the ‘foundation of societal stability’ and requires teachers to integrate constitutional and legal principles into daily life.

A lasting legacy

EdUHK’s devotion to this cause extends far more deeply than seasonal events. Backed by the National Security and Legal Education Research Centre established in 2024, the University continuously embeds these critical civic values into its structured curricula. By engaging communities and addressing modern topics like cybersecurity and climate sustainability, EdUHK continues to shape a responsible, patriotic generation prepared to safeguard the stability of Hong Kong and the nation.
