From Sichuan to Hong Kong – an inspiring journey of growth and connection

Zhao Xiaorong   Master of Teaching (English Language Education)

Moving from Sichuan province to pursue a Master of Teaching (English Language Education) at EdUHK was a life-changing experience for Zhao Xiaorong.

Her journey of academic excellence, cultural immersion, and social contribution culminated in being named one of the 2025 ‘Study in Hong Kong’ 10 Outstanding International Students. This award, organised by the Youth Expats Association and supported by the China Education Exchange (Hong Kong and Macao) Centre and China Daily (Hong Kong), honours international students who excel academically, innovate, and give back to local society.

During her intensive one-year programme, Zhao actively worked to bridge cultural and linguistic gaps. Despite having no prior knowledge of Cantonese, she took language workshops at EdUHK to help her adapt. Reflecting on this challenge, she notes, “This experience not only accelerated my integration into Hong Kong but has also allowed me to appreciate the cultural warmth embedded in the language.”

Zhao strongly believes in connecting education with community service, translating her learning into impactful societal contributions. She served as an English-reading teacher at Scientia Secondary School, worked as an etiquette assistant during the 15th National Games (Hong Kong Competition Region), and volunteered at local football matches. Additionally, she acted as a docent at the Yu Lan Festival, introducing visitors to Cantonese intangible cultural heritage. For Zhao, these diverse roles reflect her core belief. “Education is like volunteering. It’s not just about passing on knowledge, but also about carrying forward culture and connecting with society,” she says.

Zhao attributes much of her success to the open and supportive environment at EdUHK. Beyond the beautiful campus and extracurricular opportunities, she was deeply moved by the strong human connections she formed, from supportive faculty assisting with university life to programme heads sharing meals and meaningful conversations.

Today, Zhao works as a teaching assistant at EdUHK, a role she views as a natural continuation of her journey. Expressing deep gratitude to the platform and the teachers who guided her, she proudly shares this honour with everyone who supported her along the way.
