In an era where STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts and Mathematics) learning is thriving, a research team from EdUHK has developed the interactive ‘Make-Play Station’. This multifunctional play station encourages children aged from three to eight to explore and experiment across various disciplines through hands-on activities.
The innovative learning tool features 20 carefully selected STEAM toolkits, seamlessly integrated into the curriculum for creative, exploratory and maker play. For instance, the science toolkits include small measuring cylinders, helping children visualise concepts like 20 or 200 millimetres, making abstract ideas more tangible.
“Conducting small experiments independently satisfies children’s curiosity and stimulates creativity, which in turn makes learning more enjoyable and engaging,” explains Dr Annie Hu Xinyun, team leader, Assistant Professor at the Department of Early Childhood Education and Assistant Director of Global Research Institute for Finnish Education.
Designed with mobility in mind, the station can easily be moved around classrooms to support group or individual learning. Its compact, space-efficient design also includes ample storage for a variety of STEAM materials, addressing the common challenge of limited classroom space in Hong Kong.
The Make-Play Station has received significant recognition at international competitions, winning several accolades, including the Bronze Award at the 49th International Exhibition of Inventions Geneva and a Silver Medal at the Silicon Valley International Invention Festival.
