Dylan So Man-to
Bachelor of Education (Honours) (English Language)
As he took home the Best New Performer award for his role in Papa at this year’s Hong Kong Film Awards, EdUHK student Dylan So Man-to graciously thanked his family — onstage and backstage — and team, his smile betraying a hint of exhilaration. Reflecting on the surreal moment when acting legend Tony Leung presented the award to him, he admits, “It still feels like a dream — never did I expect this, but I’m incredibly grateful for the honour.”
Soft-spoken yet earnest, the first-year (English Language) Education major traced his journey from (post-Papa) preparation for the Diploma of Secondary Education exams to navigating university life at EdUHK. The past year has been transformative: transitioning from secondary school to university, experiencing campus living for the first time, forging new friendships, and immersing himself in student activities. Currently a committee member of the University’s Drama Society, Dylan is set on exploring his interests in the performing arts.
His decision to pursue education stems from formative encounters with inspiring teachers. A primary school teacher helped him overcome struggles in English, while a secondary school social worker-teacher blurred the lines between mentor and friend. “These experiences planted the seed. I wanted to be someone who could impact others the same way,” he explains.
Dylan praises the University’s verdant campus, collaborative atmosphere, and vibrant student life. But beyond aesthetics, his time there has reshaped his approach to discipline and teamwork. “I used to be carefree, but filmmaking taught me accountability — when you’re part of a team, your actions affect everyone,” he reflects. The past year at the University has taught him much about getting along with different people and managing time. “Juggling multiple commitments is an art. University life forces you to master it.”
Regarding his future career path, Dylan maintains an open mindset. He finds both teaching and acting thrilling, yet he tries to prioritise the present by valuing his time at EdUHK, diligently pursuing his degree, and seizing every performance opportunity that comes his way.
