Integrating the philosophy of sport with education

Cheung Hoi-yuen
Master of Arts in Chinese Studies (Language Education)

First-year student of the Master of Arts in Chinese Studies (Language Education) programme Cheung Hoi-yuen has been recognised with the 2024/25 President’s Commendation Scheme award in the area of Sports. Her dedication to judo has earned her numerous accolades in competitions as well as positioning her as a passionate advocate for physical activity.

Hoi-yuen’s impressive achievements in judo reflect her commitment to excellence, but her impact extends far beyond personal success. Actively involved in sports promotion on and off campus, she champions the importance of sport as a lifelong pursuit, encouraging her peers to embrace physical fitness as a fundamental part of their lives.

Hoi-yuen believes that sport can profoundly influence personal growth and character development. Drawing from her extensive experience as a judoka, she plans to integrate valuable lessons from the sport into her Chinese language teaching. She underscores skills such as concentration and problem-solving — crucial in both judo and academic settings.

Having in mind a holistic approach to education that incorporates the transformative power of sport, she also highlights the virtue of perseverance, which she believes is essential for today’s younger generation. “I aspire to cultivate resilience and determination in my future students, preparing them to navigate the challenges they may encounter in life.”
