To broaden students’ global perspectives and deepen their understanding of national diplomatic affairs, EdUHK hosted the ‘Ambassadors Talk on Campus’ lecture last October. The event featured Ambassador Luo Linquan and Ambassador Sun Gongyi, who shared personal experiences and insights on diplomacy with Chinese characteristics. A large number of faculty members and students attended, with live streaming arranged for three local secondary schools.

Co-hosted with the China Foreign Affairs University (CFAU) ― renowned as the ‘The Cradle of Chinese Diplomats’ ― the event welcomed guests including EdUHK Council Chairman Dr David Wong Yau-kar, representatives from the Commissioner’s Office of China’s Foreign Ministry in Hong Kong, and CFAU delegates.

Ambassador Luo, Vice President of the China Public Diplomacy Association, recounted highlights from his career, including China’s largest overseas evacuation during the Libyan civil war in 2011. He emphasised people-centred diplomacy and the prioritisation of human life. Ambassador Sun focused on China-Africa relations, drawing on his tenure in Mauritius where he advanced cooperation under the Belt and Road initiative.

A lively Q&A session moderated by Ms Helen Gai Huixia, Associate Vice President (Mainland Engagement and Development) engaged students on topics ranging from major-power relations to Hong Kong’s role in global diplomacy. The lecture marked a milestone in EdUHK’s partnership with CFAU, reinforcing its commitment to international relations research and education.

EdUHK welcomed H.E. Shaikh Saoud Al Mualla, Consul General of the United Arab Emirates (UAE) in Hong Kong, for his inaugural visit last June. The occasion aimed to deepen academic collaboration between the UAE and Hong Kong, China, fostering exchanges in education and research.

Professor John Lee Chi-Kin, President of EdUHK, led senior management in greeting the Consul General and a delegation from the United Arab Emirates University (UAEU). The meeting reviewed joint achievements, including dual degree programmes, a research grant, and the Summer Academic Development Programme with UAEU, the UAE’s top-ranked university. Both parties discussed expanding scholarships and exchange opportunities for UAE students in Hong Kong.

Following the meeting, the Consul General attended the closing ceremony of the summer programme, presenting certificates to ten UAEU undergraduates. The visit underscored EdUHK’s commitment to advancing educational cooperation with Belt and Road partners.

The 4th Asian-African Women’s Development and Cooperation Forum was held at EdUHK last November. Centred on the theme ‘Opportunities and Challenges for Women’s Development in the Age of AI,’ the event brought together former presidents, ambassadors, scholars, and social leaders from across Asia and Africa.

The forum featured keynote addresses from global leaders and distinguished guests, including:

  • H.E. Dr Ameenah Gurib-Fakim, former President of Mauritius
  • Ms Shirley Lam Shuet-lai, Permanent Secretary for Home and Youth Affairs from the Government of the Hong Kong SAR

  • Ms Starry Lee Wai-king, Standing Committee Member of the 14th National People’s Congress of the People’s Republic of China and Honorary Professor of EdUHK
  • Dr Thet Thet Zin, President of the Myanmar Women’s Affairs Federation
  • Ms Louise Ho Pui-shan, Chief Commissioner of The Hong Kong Girl Guides Association and former Commissioner of Customs and Excise Department
  • Dr David Wong Yau-kar, EdUHK Council Chairman
  • Professor John Lee Chi-Kin, EdUHK President and Member of the 14th National Committee of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference.

During the forum, EdUHK announced the launch of the Global Centre for Women, Development and Education, supported by HK$10 million in donations. The Centre will promote collaboration among women in the Global South through research, training, and policy dialogue.

Keynote speakers highlighted the importance of inclusive innovation, with calls to ensure AI closes rather than widens the gender digital divide. The event also marked the launch of the Global Alliance for Women Development and Action, uniting partners to advance gender equality worldwide.

The forum reaffirmed EdUHK’s commitment to the UN’s Sustainable Development Goals, particularly gender equality and reduced inequalities.

EdUHK, together with Hong Kong Commercial Daily, launched the ‘Renowned Chinese Writers Enter Hong Kong Campuses’ exchange programme last October at its Tai Po campus. The initiative commemorated the 80th anniversary of the victory of the Chinese People’s War of Resistance Against Japanese Aggression and the World Anti-Fascist War, and aimed to enhance students’ literary knowledge and understanding of contemporary Chinese history.

Celebrated writers Mr Huang Yazhou and Mr Yi Xiangdong engaged in dialogue with hundreds of teachers and students. Mr Huang spoke on grand historical narratives, sharing insights from his novels Sunrise in the East and Red Boat, as well as film and television scripts. Mr Yi discussed military literature, drawing on his service experience and highlighting his award-winning novel Once Carried a Gun in the Army.

Workshops, school visits, and the exhibition ‘Culture Has Power: Lu Xun, Hong Kong and the War of Resistance’ enriched the programme, inspiring reflection on cultural inheritance and identity.

EdUHK inaugurated the ‘EdUHK Martial Arts @ School Education Programme’ last October at its Tai Po campus. The two-year initiative will promote Chinese martial arts education and is expected to benefit more than 1,000 primary and secondary school students. Led by Miss Chen Suijin, world champion and Asian Games bronze medallist, the programme involves professional coaches and EdUHK students delivering experiential classes to around 30 schools between September 2025 and June 2026. Students will learn both the philosophy and practice of wushu, deepening their appreciation of traditional culture.

The launch ceremony was officiated by Under Secretary for Education Dr Jeff Sze Chun-fai and EdUHK President Professor John Lee Chi-Kin, with guests including Mr Ha Tak-kin, Vice President of the Wushu Union of Hong Kong, China. Demonstrations by over 40 students showcased martial arts stances and movements.

EdUHK plans to expand the programme with advanced courses in selected model schools. These schools will integrate martial arts into their regular physical education activities and receive professional support from EdUHK in areas such as martial arts instruction and training guidance. The initiative is designed to encourage students to engage in martial arts and carry forward traditional Chinese culture, and seeks to enhance their cultural pride and sense of identity, promote holistic physical and mental development, and foster a sense of patriotism and love for Hong Kong.

EdUHK hosted the ‘Hong Kong Secondary School Belt and Road Quiz Competition’ last September at its Tai Po campus. The event aimed to broaden students’ global perspectives and deepen their understanding of the Belt and Road Initiative, covering areas such as economy, geography, culture, and history.

Organised by EdUHK’s School Partnership and Field Experience Office with support from the Belt and Road Office of the Commerce and Economic Development Bureau, the competition was co-organised by major school councils and associations. Radio Television Hong Kong served as media partner.

Commissioner for Belt and Road Mr Nicholas Ho Lik-chi and EdUHK President Professor John Lee Chi-Kin officiated, encouraging students to embrace innovation and responsibility while recognising Hong Kong’s unique role in regional cooperation.

The preliminary round involved 160 students from 40 schools. Five teams qualified for the final: Hong Kong Taoist Association The Yuen Yuen Institute No. 2 Secondary School, Law Ting Pong Secondary School, Sing Yin Secondary School, Tung Wah Group of Hospitals Wong Fut Nam College, and Valtorta College.

Marking the 10th anniversary of EdUHK’s retitling, the University hosted the ‘Caring Together Walkathon’ and the Hong Kong Marathon 2026 EdUHK Running Team Kick off Ceremony in January, at its Pak Shek Kok Sports Centre. The event brought together over 500 participants, including alumni, students, staff, partner organisations, and members of the public, in a collective effort to convey community care and positivity.

The Walkathon symbolised mutual support in times of change and challenge. The event featured a new pet-friendly initiative, where 30 dogs joined the walk, and special medals and gift packs were arranged for the pets to enrich the experience and celebrate companionship.

A delegation from the University Grants Committee (UGC), led by Chairman Mr Tim Lui Tim-leung and Secretary-General Professor James Tang Tuck-hong, visited EdUHK in September 2025. The group of some 20 members and staff engaged with 49 students and 40 academic staff, while senior management presented the University’s strategic vision, curriculum development, research achievements and sustainable initiatives.

Highlights included innovations in learning and teaching, sports science, and knowledge transfer. At the Conference Centre, faculty members showcased projects such as a Metaverse-based awareness programme on AI ethics, shortlisted for 13th International Educational Games Competition at the European Conference on Games Based Learning 2025; an adaptive learning platform; and classroom simulations for inclusive education. The delegation also toured the Human Performance Laboratory, featuring Hong Kong’s first SmartCourt – equipped with real-time multi-angle video recording and analytical capabilities – and learned about support offered to elite athletes through the Student-Athlete Learning Support and Admission Scheme scheme.

Vice President (Research and Development) Professor Chetwyn Chan Che-hin outlined EdUHK’s research strengths, while President Professor John Lee Chi-Kin reaffirmed the University’s mission to advance education and research together under the Strategic Plan 2025-2031.
