The University recently launched the third phase of its Artificial Intelligence Literacy Programme, thanks to a donation by Mr Li Ka-shing.
As AI increasingly shapes our society, it has become essential to develop foundational AI literacy, so that people in the community have the knowledge to not only use the technology but also help shape its role. Thanks to generous support from the Li Ka Shing Foundation (LKSF) and the UGC Research Matching Grant Scheme, the University’s newly established ‘Artificial Intelligence and Digital Competency Education Centre’ (AIDCEC) is helping to meet this need by providing free AI education to Hong Kong residents, through the Artificial Intelligence Literacy Programme.
The initiative began in 2020, with the first phase comprising the design and evaluation of a programme for University and Secondary School Students. Phase two, which began two years later, involved developing the programme for senior secondary students, as well as those studying at university. The third phase has been running since last year, and develops AI literacy for senior secondary students, their teachers and parents, as well as for administrative staff in small and medium-sized enterprises. “AI tools can enhance teaching effectiveness, while narrowing the learning gaps among different learners, which helps promote individual learning,” says Professor Kong Siu-cheung, Director of the AIDCEC at EdUHK. “Therefore, teachers, parents and students should harness the power of AI to address pedagogical challenges and develop independent thinking,” he adds.
The programmes are carefully designed to impart core knowledge about AI in an accessible way for broad audiences. All necessary learning and teaching materials are available so participants can build a strong AI foundation. Phase three is expected to benefit over 850 people. In all it will comprise 30 hours of face-to-face lessons, tutorials, self-learning exercises and presentations. It covers the basic concepts of machine and deep learning, and provides tips on generating effective questions for inquiry and prompts. At the end of the programme, participants have to develop a work plan to apply AI in the classroom or workplace.
The AIDCEC was established as part of EdUHK’s dedication to promoting the application of AI and technological innovation. It helps individuals from the education sector and beyond to access knowledge and skills related to AI. The Centre aims to contribute to the growth and development of the digital economy in a way that is socially responsible and sustainable.
